National Geographic Society and Lindblad Expeditions have selected Brittany Berry for the 15th Grosvenor Teacher Fellows cohort.
Berry, a Helen Tyson Middle School EAST facilitator, is one of 50 pre-K-12 classroom and informal educators from across the continent to be selected as a cohort Fellow.
As a Fellow, Berry will embark on a Journey to Antarctica: The White Continent voyage aboard the National Geographic Explorer expedition vessel, Berry said.
"Throughout my expedition, I will get hands-on, field-based educational and research opportunities, as well as a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience that I will use to inform my curriculum and inspire my students to become environmental stewards," she said.
Berry's experience will include huge tabular icebergs, sculptural bergs floating in pools of turquoise blue meltwater, mountains rising some 9,000 feet from the sea, abundant penguins and marine mammal sightings and cruising through the solemn majesty of the Lemaire Channel, according to the National Geographic website.
Berry said she hopes others are inspired by her experience.
"I would love the opportunity to share this exciting story with the community and hopefully inspire more educators in our area to apply for the fellowship in future years," she said.
The 2023 cohort of Grosvenor Teacher Fellows consists of educators from 24 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces and the first-ever Fellow from Puerto Rico, according to a National Geographic press release. The diverse group of educators represent an array of grade levels and subject areas, including social studies, science, technology, engineering and math, second-language programs and art.
“We are very pleased to be honoring this year’s Grosvenor Teacher Fellows as they prepare to embark on their global expeditions,” said Deborah Grayson, National Geographic Society chief education officer. “These passionate, deserving educators will have the opportunity to bring real-world experiences back to their classrooms as engaging resources and tools to inspire the next generation of planetary stewards.”
The Fellowship is open to pre-K–12 educators, who apply and are selected through a competitive application process. Fellows take on a two-year leadership commitment to support National Geographic’s education initiatives, according to the National Geographic website. Fellows may be asked to conduct webinars, co-design resources, participate in meetups and serve as mentors to other educators.
